Gmail tips

Some really excellent tips for Gmail from Google Tutor by Abhijeet Mukherjee

Do you know that if you’ve got an email address as abc@gmail.com, you automatically get another email address which is abc@googlemail.com ? They both will send mail directly to your inbox at gmail.

What is the advantage of having two email addresses in the same Gmail account. You could use the filter capability to send the mail to different folders to avoid inbox clutter and to be read later.

But there is more, you get unlimited email accounts also.

It is not just the googlemail address which you get. Your email address abc@gmail.com is same as abc+def@gmail.com, abc+defg@gmail.com. For example you can have your gmail joesmith@gmail.com but then you have decided to subscribe to an online magazine or group so you could make your address with them joesmith+mygroup@gmail.com and then set up a filter for anything coming in with that address to be highlighted or go directly to a folder to avoid your inbox being overwhelmed. Depends of course how much mail you get.

I have subscribed to a few things lately and my inbox is getting a little cluttered so I think I will used this from now on.

The little things that annoy you may have a purpose.

I received this email this morning. Some of you may have already seen it but if not it is worth thinking about and being grateful for those little things that slow us down from time to time.

As you might know, the head of a company survived
9/11 because his son started kindergarten.

Another fellow was alive because it was
His turn to bring donuts.

One woman was late because her
Alarm clock didn't go off in time.

One was late because of being stuck on the NJ Turnpike
Because of an auto accident.

One of them
Missed his bus.

One spilled food on her clothes and had to take
Time to change.

One's
Car wouldn't start.

One couldn't
Get a taxi.

The one that struck me was the man
Who put on a new pair of shoes that morning,
Took the various means to get to work
But before he got there, he developed
a blister on his foot.
He stopped at a drugstore to buy a Band-Aid.
That is why he is alive today.

Now when I am
Stuck in traffic ,
Miss an elevator,
Turn back to answer a ringing telephone .
All the little things that annoy me.
I think to myself,
This is exactly where God wants me to be at this very moment..

Next time your morning seems to be going wrong;

The children are slow getting dressed,
You can't seem to find the car keys,

You hit every traffic light,

Don't get mad or frustrated it may be just that

God is at work watching over you.

May God continue to bless you

With all those annoying little things

And may you remember their possible purpose.

Sprouted Grain Bread Recipe For Your Crock Pot

Since I have recently been diagnosed with Diabetes 2 I have been searching out different ways to make bread that will bring down the carbohydrate value. I also like to sprout my own seeds for salads and thought I would like to try sprouted wheat bread which is cooked in a crockpot.

I found this recipe and it is very simple as it is made with only one ingredient.
1 cup wheat berries, sprouter, food processor, and a crockpot with a low setting.
Soak wheat berries overnight. Then rinse and drain the berries three times a day for the next 32 hours or until the wheat berries have sprouted about a quarter inch. Make sure the berries are well drained before processing into dough, they don't need rinsing after they are finished sprouting.
Place the sprouted wheat berries into your food processor and pulse until the berries resemble bread dough and form a ball around the food processor blade.
Remove the ball of dough from the food processor. Shape the dough into 1 small ball. Place the shaped dough into a small Pyrex type bowl that will easily fit into your crock pot.
Place the cover on your crock pot and turn to its lowest setting. Cook the bread for approximately 8 hours or until the bread is a rich, dark brown. The top of the bread may crack and it will have a tough, thick crust on the outside and a moist, brown bread on the inside.
This bread is very rich, delicious and extra nutritious because it uses sprouted berries. Because it is so nutritionally dense, you only need a small piece to accompany your salad or soup entrée. This recipe will serve about 4. Your sprouted grain bread recipe will stay fresh in your refrigerator for about 1 week.
The problem is I don't have a crock pot so on my next trip to town I will have to check out the what is available in our local store.

Heads or Tails - Line

A couple of years ago hubby and I went out fishing for salmon on the big lake. We had not had a very good time so far and although we could see others catching fish we were not. Suddenly I caught a big one, it felt really heavy and my line was bent right over. Hubby is yelling instructions and slowly I pulled out a large ocean going net, brand new, it must have fallen off a boat although it was really too big for lake fishing. He still has it and intends to use it when he goes up to Prince Rupert in a few days to catch halibut. We never did catch any fish that day but we did okay the next and since then we have learned how to fish the big lake for salmon but we fish the smaller lakes for trout. Actually I have not been fishing for a long time since hubby's friend moved up here. I could if I wanted to but the men like to go out for a long time, over five hours, and just a couple of hours would be fine by me so I have given it up but I might insist that hubby takes me just for a little while a least once this summer.

It's a depressing thought

Already we are past the longest day. Up here that means the sun is out at about 3 am and doesn't go down till about 10:30 pm, so I have to sleep with the shades down as it is too light at bedtime. Now that the first day of summer has passed we are heading towards the shortest day which means we need the lights on most of the day, switching them off around 10:30 am and putting them on again about 3pm. A complete reversal.

We have been talking about new light fixtures since last winter but knowing that we would not need them until this winter have put off purchasing new ones. The ones we have are just not doing the job, we need more light especially in the living room.

We have standing lamps but they just give light in specific areas and I feel we need ceiling light fixtures also to offset the depressing winter gloom. I don't know if a pair of matching chandeliers would do it, one in the dining room and one in the living room. I think it will be hard to find a good spot for one in the living room though. I guess we will have to check out the various home lighting stores and finally make a choice as in a few months we will have to put on the lights a lot earlier than we are tonight.

Arctic warming has become so dramatic that the North
Pole may melt this summer, report scientists studying the effects of climate change in the field.

"We're actually projecting this year that the North Pole may be

Some dumb ass cowboy ....

We have a rogue bear careening about the outskirts of the village. We have enough of a bear problem here as it is without some dumb ass cowboy playing cowboy and Indians.

I mentioned a couple of days ago that there had been a large male black bear on the property and hubby and Annie the dog scared it off. Apparently it has been doing quite a bit of damage in the village. So someone with a hunting bow shot it in the shoulder so now it is hurting and mad. It will have to be killed now as it will either die of poisoning or starvation. Usually the village put out bear traps and the animals are relocated but this particular person took matters into his own hands and now we have a problem. Shooting inside the village is against the law and there was absolutely no need to do this. I don't know who it was but I would be rounding up all those with hunting bows and putting the thumbscrews to them. Since the entire village consists of 350 people or less it would only be a handful of people.

They have created a potentially very dangerous situation. This bear, a wily old one, knows enough not to go near traps and will be very difficult to catch. In the meantime we cannot leave windows open that a bear could get through, and have to be very careful if outside because if it is unable to hunt it will be looking for food and very aggressive. I snuck out to water my plants with bear banger in hand but I am not sure it would stop an angry, hurting, starving bear so I was only out very briefly.

I keep my garbage in the deep freeze until pick up morning and then it goes out just before the truck comes. It is not unusual to see garbage cans being hauled off by bears or rolled around at least if you put them out too early. I have no seed out and have removed the humming bird feeders. The dogs in the village are barking a lot at night so I expect it is around looking for something to eat.

To top off my bear saga we have a black bear sow and cub living about 1/4 mile down the road so I don't want to run into her and we were warned there is a sow grizzly and cubs in the vicinity. My husband says it is safer here than the city but I am not so sure, a few panhandlers and drunks don't sound so bad.

Funny they should think so

I was visiting Misty and her post Doggone Coincidence and thought I would go do the same for fun and was amused to see this. Since I live right across from the Alaska Panhandle but inland and it gets cold enough for Polar Bears it was a coincidence or am I in the Twilight Zone, scary eh.

How they have changed, I hope it will not be a shock

boymural A very amateurish rendering of the boys over the years but you get the idea.

They are all off to see their Grandmother in Jersey in the Channel Islands which is just off England this Saturday. Steve the eldest at the top is a father of two sons. He is the graphic artist and cartoonist cum self published comic book creator living in Vancouver, BC.

David is in the middle, he would like to get married but has been unlucky in love twice so a bit gun shy. He is a drummer and may go professional soon as he has opportunities to back up several groups when they record. He also is the business man of the family and works in insurance plus runs an online marketing business of his own.

Jesse the youngest is a soft as they come but looks like a biker. He is the biggest of the three and they are all about 6ft. Jesse has his hair almost to his waist in a ponytail, but no tattoos, thank goodness. He was going into robotics but the cost of education put him off and he felt there were a lot of folk coming out of the universities with technical degrees so he has been working in various construction jobs and just going from day to day, but he does quite a bit of 3D stuff on the computer, he is very much a loner. I hope he gets some direction soon as to a career although construction is not a bad line to be in these days.

Dave and Jess share an apartment in Calgary. If you ever watched the Odd Couple show on TV you will get the idea, except it is a bit reversed. David looks like he would be the neatnik, not so, Jesse is the one who is always complaining what a slob his brother is, maybe David needs to smarten up before he will meet Miss Right.

It is funny to go out with Jess, his brothers think it is hilarious that he has this charisma. Girls stop and stare when he walks by, but he has no interest. He told me when he is ready to get married he will start to date until then he is not interested in playing games. If he wanted to he could have a date every night of the week.

They leave on Saturday for two weeks. Their Grandmother, their Father's mother will be 85 and it is a surprise for her that they are coming. She has not seen them for 15 years I hope the shock will not be too much.

Trying out ScribeFire for Firefox3

When I upgraded to Firefox 3 I was no longer able to use an extension for Windows Live Writer a
program which I really liked.

So I have downloaded the updated version of ScribeFire a blogging tool which works with Firefox and am giving it a whirl.

Not sure if it can do all the things I liked about Live Writer, which has some nice plugins but it is early days yet. It does have some nice features though and it means I do not have to leave the Firefox browser. You can drag pictures which normally I would have to save and then load it again. That is a nice feature and a tremendous time saver. Also I just dragged the text below in. Looks like this will work really well and there are plenty of reviews from happy bloggers so worth a try.

ScribeFire is a full-featured blog editor that integrates with your browser and lets you easily post to your blog. You can drag and drop formatted text from pages you are browsing, take notes, upload images, and post to multiple blogs.

You can add your categories and add a time stamp, plus I can pull up any old post should I wish to. It will handle multiple blogs too. You can use the html code feature if needed and it offers the ability to include YouTube videos and Flicker and you can preview your post.

I will still use Live Writer on occasion. LW has a few plugins I find useful, word count for example which I use if I am writing a post for an advertising company and I want to know if I have enough words and I like some of their picture manipulation plugins but on the whole I think ScribeFire will do a great job.

Heads or Tails - Wait

Wait has been on my lips more times than not these couple of weeks. I have missed so many camera opportunities because my models wouldn't wait. I was driving out the other day and a lynx froze beside the road, one could hardly see it amongst the brush, I rushed to get the camera out and poof it was gone. Then another day a small herd of mule deer was browsing as I drove by, I stopped and got the camera out and if on cue they slipped quietly away before I could take the shot.  I wanted to take a shot of the lovely little blue butterflies that are out now but they just won't keep still, unfortunately the only sitting candidate was the blue jay family making their nest in the front porch but they just recently abandoned the nest.

The day before yesterday Annie the dog was barking frantically and hubby went to see what it was all about.  I looked out of the solarium window and saw a large, presumably male, black bear that was making a bee line for the deck, probably remembering that he had found some seed last year. I rushed to get the camera and my bear banger (sounds like a gun shot but won't kill anything) but before I got back hubby and Annie had chased it away.

So I suppose I am not destined to be a photographer, I am just not fast enough.

Powerless and empowered

We have been without power and water for a couple of days. There was a couple of loud explosions in the village Tuesday afternoon and everything shut down. Apparently a dump truck had somehow managed to touch an overhead power cable and that was that. At the same time the water system in the village developed a leak and the maintenance have been trying to trace it.

Now we are all back on line and there are dishes piled up and the place is a mess. How we rely on these things, when so many in the world don't have easy access to water and no electricity. We have much to be thankful for.

So since I could not do much I have been gadding about in the car, not that there is much to look at and I missed three would be photographs by being too slow. A young moose, a mule deer and a bear. Except this morning I had ran out of gas so was stuck here until the power came on. Fortunately I did not have to cook another meal on the wood stove. Our moose stew slow cooked nicely on there yesterday but my eggs this morning seemed to take ages, plus it was hot having it going when yesterday was a scorcher although today we had a lot of rain and it cooled down.musclewoman

Apart from the above I have been sick with an infection, plus several appointments with diabetes counsellors, nutritionists and doctors. I am happy to report that I have no kidney disease, and in fact the blood work I had where they test to see how much sugar is attached to your blood cells came out better, they told me, than most non-diabetic people AlC 5.3 to anyone that understands these things. I am still a diabetic and I can't change that but because I have always lived a low carb lifestyle it is very controlled. They told me to carry on doing what I have been doing since it is working, so I feel empowered rather than depressed that I lost the battle. My father had diabetes in later life and that set me up for it, unfortunately I have passed that gene on to my kids and to my grandsons but now I have to educate them to be vigilant also.

So now I have to head over to my Reader and catch up with you all.

Power abused

I found this article which should be very interesting to anyone wanting to lose weight,is insulin resistant or has diabetes. Please read, it is enlightening how power has been abused in this regard. A sort of benign dictatorship that has removed the power of decision from the layperson.

The Weight of Evidence posted June 16, 2006

In an interesting twist this week, in an updated WedMD article, American Diabetes Association spokesman Nathaniel G. Clark, MD acknowledged in an interview that carbohydrate restricted diets help people with type II diabetes control blood sugar.
In previous articles, I've stated evidence-based medicine must be the gold standard used for making for recommendations; I've pointed to the consensus driven, dogmatic position of the ADA; and I've stated in no uncertain terms that the ADA must be held accountable for the health harming position, based on opinion not data, it takes.
Now the excuse from the ADA is that they do not recommend controlling carbohydrate because patients find them too restrictive. "We want to promote a diet that people can live with long-term," says Clark, who is vice president of clinical affairs and youth strategies for the ADA. "People who go on very low carbohydrate diets generally aren't able to stick with them for long periods of time."
The WebMD update was prompted by the publication of Low-carbohydrate diet in type 2 diabetes. Stable improvement of bodyweight and glycemic control during 22 months follow-up, in the peer-reviewed journal, Nutrition & Metabolism.
The study started as a six month study to compare the effect of a low-carb or low-fat diet in those with type II diabetes. The original study data was published in 2005. In the present study, the researchers wanted to determine to what degree the changes among the 16 patients in the low-carbohydrate diet group at 6-months were preserved or changed 22 months after start, even without close follow-up. They also noted that 2/3 of the original low-fat group modified their diet after the study term and also showed improvement after making the dietary change. At the 22-month mark it was concluded that the improvements found at six months had a lasting effect on both body weight and glycemic control.
Noteworthy is that this is the first "long-term" study - one that didn't even include intensive follow-up and tracking for compliance - at almost two years. Without dietary counseling those who experienced the dramatic improvements stuck with the diet - even the majority of those subjected to the low-fat diet saw the results in the group following the low-carb diet and jumped at the chance to follow a low-carb diet and experienced the improvements too in the period between six months and twenty-two months.
So, it's now difficult for the ADA to say there's no data. What they're doing now is changing their tune - patients don't want to follow the diet, it's too hard.
Again we see the ADA purposely avoiding evidence-based medicine standards.
Quite frankly, it doesn't matter if a patient can or will follow the dietary protocol the evidence shows is superior to the current recommendations. Evidence-based medicine demands these findings be not just acknowledged in an interview, but presented to the patient as a line of defense in their management of the disease.
It's nothing but pure arrogance for the ADA to arbitrarily decide that it will not fully disclose the benefits of a carbohydrate restricted diet, as shown by the evidence, to patients because it feels patients won't want to follow the diet.
Since when does the ADA or any other medical organization decide what a patient wants?
Those with type II diabetes, those with pre-diabetes, and those at risk for developing insulin resistance which will lead to diabetes must be given all the facts so they can make a decision based on the full data available - anything less fails the standard of informed consent.
This study shows that individuals, when given an opportunity to experience the health changing effects of carbohydrate restriction, stick with it for the long-term. And who wouldn't? Just imagine what their health would be today if they never enrolled in the study and never were given the information about how to properly follow a carbohydrate restricted diet - they'd be progressively deteriorating!
Instead, their improvements are persisting - because they chose to continue eating a carbohydrate restricted diet.

I had a visit with our Canadian Diabetes Nutritionist this week and told her what I ate and that it was approximately 60 grams of carbohydrate a day and she was most approving. So I asked her why they hand out a 188 gram diet sheet to Diabetics. She said because they don't think most people will stick to a real low carb diet. I think that is the person's choice not the Associations. How many people have gone from insulin resistance to full blown diabetes because they were never told to start cutting carbs to low levels.

I have always eaten about 100 carbs per day but even that has proven too much and I am doing much better on 60. I am not hungry after two hours and I have more energy, plus I have lost 3lbs in a week. The doc wanted me to get down from 155 to 145, although actually 143 is meant to be the best weight for my age and size, but I will try for 140 which will give me a little leeway. It is important to consider your age when you decide what weight you should be. It is not healthy for older women to be as skinny as a teen, our bones don't like it among other things. Basically I eat fruit, except bananas and mangos, which I love, any vegetable, a few beans and protein. No starch.

The only thing that has kept me miserable this week is an infection and I have since realized it is the medication which I have to take twice a day that is causing me to be nauseous, tremble, and other nasties but it is killing the bug so I have to endure for a little more. So that is why I have not been that diligent in visiting and posting.

I hope this post has been helpful to some.

Heads or Tails - Flower

Provincial Flower ofdogwood British Columbia

The Pacific dogwood (Cornus nauttallii) was adopted in 1956 as British Columbia's floral emblem. The Pacific dogwood is a tree that grows six to eight meters high and flowers in April and May. In the autumn it is conspicuous for its cluster of bright red berries and brilliant foliage.

In general, our native dogwoods have four-season appeal. With spring come flowers, sometimes showy, sometimes fragrant. Summer brings berries that contrast nicely with the leaves. Autumn leaves are eye-catching, with shades of red and orange and, for some species, a late show of bright berries. For one species, at least, snowy winter affords a stunning contrast of bright red branches against the white snow.

The origin of the name dogwood is anyone's guess, but two likely theories have been proposed. The first refers to a European species of dogwood (Cornus sanguinea) that was used for making skewers, or daggers, and would have been referred to as dag, dague, or dagge (dagger) in old English. The second theory is based on the reported use of the same species for washing mangy dogs. As for Cornus, it is Latin for “horn” and likely refers to the hardness of the wood.

Nutrition Data

On the right side bar you will see a new widget. This is a great tool, it will tell you the values of just about any food. Carbs, calories, glycemic index or load, if it causes inflammation and much more.

As some of you know I have just been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes so I joined a support group to learn more called Daily Strength. Actually they offer support groups for just about anything covering Mental and Physical Health and Personal Challenges. I have received a lot of advice already and it is paying off, so if you think they may help you out with something why not try it out.

I would like to take a closer look

We get so many birds around here I have often thought it would be great to have some birding binoculars. From my living room window I can make out several flashes of yellow in our willow tree but my husband and I often contemplate exactly what bird it is. Likely they are some type of warbler but there are so many varieties that a pair of binoculars would make identification a lot easier.
Even with the birds we know, like the Stellar's Jay pair that have made a nest in the entrance way, it would be great to have a pair of binoculars because then I could keep an eye on them from a distance, as it is I have been very careful not to disturb them, although a squirrel has been tormenting them a bit and they might re-locate.
Last winter we saw what we think was a snowy owl hunting beside the road as we drove out of the village. It was difficult to make it out clearly against the snow but a pair of binoculars would have made all the difference.

Heads or Tails - Royal

Skittles has a meme called Heads or Tails and this week we are to write something about Royal.

The Royal British Columbia Museum is one of the foremost cultural institutions in the world. It is a history museum located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, founded in 1886. It was given the "Royal" title upon a visit by Queen Elizabeth II in 1986.

In recent years, exhibits have included HMS Titanic, Leonardo da Vinci, Egyptian artifacts and Genghis Khan.

The museum is located in Victoria's Inner Harbour, close to the Empress Hotel named for Queen Victoria, the Empress of India.
